The United Kingdom has announced it will ban the sale of new cars that only run on fossil fuels by 2030. The sale of hybrid-electric vehicles, however, will be allowed until 2035.

This initiative is part of UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s “Green Industrial Revolution” which also supports creating up to 250,000 new jobs. “This plan can be a global template for delivering net zero emissions in ways that creates jobs and preserve our lifestyles,” said Johnson in a statement. “Green and growth can go hand-in-hand. So let us meet the most enduring threat to our planet with one of the most innovative and ambitious programmes of job-creation we have known.”

This new deadline is 5 years earlier than previously expected, and it is likely the most aggressive in the world. In the United States, California recently announced the state will require 100% zero-emission passenger vehicle sales by 2035.
